Ideally, new trees should be planted in the fall after leaf drop or early spring before budbreak. Cooler weather will allow plants to establish roots in their new home before spring rains and summer heat stimulate growth of the canopy.  Trees purchased from a reputable nursery, such as Signal Mountain Nursery, can be planted at any time of year when done correctly.  Proper handling during planting is crucial to ensure healthy development.

If the roots of the tree you are planting is balled, its root system has been reduced by 90 to 95 percent of its original size. As a result of the trauma caused by digging and handling, trees will experience transplant shock. Containerized trees may also experience transplant shock, particularly if they have circling roots that must be cut. Transplant shock is characterized by slow growth and reduced vigor. Proper site preparation before and during planting coupled with good follow-up care reduces the amount of time the plant experiences transplant shock and allows the tree to quickly establish in its new location.
